Dear Amin, from what I understood your problem occurs in a specific Word document in which you have been working, correct? Since you said the same does not happen to "new documents", I'd recommed copying all the document (Ctrl + A -> Ctrl + C) and pasting in a new word document (Ctrl + V). I know that does not solve the problem, but it is a way to quickly overcome the issue. Hope it helps

Actually, once I copied and pasted the document in a new file, it still did not work. Instead, I used another approach and worked. I felt that some references in the document are likely crashed. Then, I copied and pasted each chapter in a new file. I could add references to all chapters without error except chapter two. Then, I found that chapter two should be the problematic chapter. Then I copied and pasted a few pages each in a new file. I could add references to all new files except for one of which. Then I found that there is a problem on that file. Then I copied and pasted each page of the file in a new document and I continued this approach until I found the problematic references. Finally, I deleted those references and entered them through Mendeley again and thereby the problem was resolved.

I got the same problem. But, my cites doesn´t work in any file of word. Actually, I opened a blank document and, when I try to insert a new cite, the "Formating citation" appears. I´ll be glad if anyone knows why this hapen and/or gives a solution for this problem.

What Amin Ansary says really makes sense. This bug usually it is because some (or one) of the refs crashed (or is/are problematic). So opening a new file and copying paragraph by paragraph (or better by number of refs), say... copying 10 citations to a new file and test Mendeley to see if you can add a new ref.

If, yes, then copy another 10 citations to test the new ones.

If not, then the problematic ones are inside these 10, so may be you can delete 5 citations and test again...

Until you find the problematic one.

If you use revision mode (track changes), there is a higher chance to meet the problem, specially when you change something in the middle where you need to add extra amount of refs, this may give extra burden to the system since each time you update ref the following will have to change their numeration orders, so you'd better not using track changes in this case.

I think you can solved the issue by updating to the latest version of the Mendeley Desktop and the MS Word Plugin.

For any LibreOffice users, this issue was fixed for me when I accepted all changes and stopped tracking changes.

I had the same problem which turned out be caused by having both Mendeley and EndNote fields in the same document. After removing EndNote fields, normal functioning of Mendeley was restored.

I experience the same problem with Mendeley as described above.

I was also looking for an adequate way to solve this. Unfortunately, there's no solution for this kind of bug yet.

From my understanding, this problem occurs when too many references were manually changed.

Amin Ansary already described a work around. Here's my work around that works better for me.

DISCLAIMER: ONLY A WORK AROUND:

1.) Open a new Word document

2.) Put all further references you need there

3.) Copy/paste it in your current paper

Not the perfect solution but still better than Mendeley not working.

I've had similar problems. I still unsure in how I got them or how I solved them but managed to get rid of them after some frustrating couple of hours. What it seems to works for me is to press Alt+F9 and see the formatting/coding of the references. Once there, somehow I managed to identify the formatting discrepancies and then just deleted the wrong ones to re-insert them once again (Similar to your copy/paste strategy at the end). Then everything worked alright.

what i can tell you is that the first time it happened was once that i had both endnote and mendeley formatting on my document. Another time, while doing "manual editing", I accidentally erased one of the references from a cluster of references. This resulted on a "hiding" reference that existed on the formatting but not on the manuscript. Again, it wasn't something nice to deal at the very end of the editing of your about-to-be-submitted manuscript. Anyhow, good luck to everyone with your reference formatting. You are almost there!

My problem is different. When I save an article in the mendeley folder and cite, for some articles , the title cited is totally different from that of the saved article.
