How to size the driving motor for gear test rig in terms of torque requirement ?

Is motor should capable enough to cater the required input torque to gear subjected to test or can it be less, since the loading mechanism is different

To some extend the answer depends on the gear's properties you want to test, but generally speaking the motor should be able to deliver ,at least' the gear's rated torque. Reducing torque is always possible - but how to inxrease torque beyond the design limits?
