In order to evaluate the performance of concrete slabs-on-grade, the sub-grade should also be considered in the testing setup.
Using soil or sand to reproduce the sub-grade is a common solution, but require some special arrangements in the setup.
Thus, do you have any other suggestion on how to reproduce the sub-grade of pavements without using soil?
Do you think extruded polystyrene foam could be used for this purpose?

I have never tried it before and I have just thought of it when I read your question; so I am not sure how feasible my suggestion would be. You might think about using springs with different stiffnesses to simulate the modulus of subgrade reaction of different types of soils. I mean put the concrete slab on springs; you increase the stiffness of the spring, you simulate better soil support
