In SDN there are two ways for establishing flow rules in OpenFlow switch, while a Packet_in message sent to controller i.e. proactive and reactive. Many literature argued that proactive mode decreases the flow forwarding delay compared to reactive mode. Any techniques followed by OpenFlow protocol for the same?
You can customize the packet in message format so that only essential details (exclude the data and include only essential details from packet header such as src/dst ip addresses) are included. This will slightly reduce the delay in getting flow rules.
And for the proactive and reactive flow instantiation thing, Yes proactive controlling reduce the delay significantly. However there are some disadvantages in some areas such as Security.
There is a new trend going on related flow instantiation. Which is Predictive flow instantiation.
