Dear colleagues, I would like to quantify Teflon (Polytetrafluoroethylene) degradation in a liquid media, it was recommended to me to use Ion-specific Electrode for Fluorine quantification. I wanted to know if there are other methods you would suggest.

many thanks for sharing this very interesting technical question wth the RG community. To the best of my knowledge there are no common liquid media that will lead to degradation of Teflon. Teflon is not even attacked by aqua regia. I I suspect that in water there will be absolutely no fluoride ions released from Teflon.

Dear Nissem: P.S. For the second part of your question ("Or Fluorine release in aqueous solutions ?") please note that fluorine can only be released from any materials in the form of fluoride ions. You are absolutely right in that a specific fluoride ion electrode is useful to quantify the fluoride release. For a potentially useful protocol please have a look at the following article:

There is a very interesting study where the combination of Flow + presence of metal ions + carbohydrates in the media triggered a triboelectric phenomenon that caused the Teflon to disassemble in polymeric fragments. ). These conditions are somehow similar to water processing equipment where different kinds of materials interact and release elements (Copper, Aluminum...). In addition to the presence of active microbial cells. That's why we got interested in measuring possible fluoride release.- Badges
