The lightning protection system of a photovoltaic park against direct lighting strikes can be designed based on the rolling sphere method so as to properly place air-terminals (grounded rods and/or shield wires) which intercept downward lightning leaders and guide the return stroke current to the grounding system of the park.
Surges related to lightning events to the dc and ac side of the photovoltaic park should be suppressed by installing surge protective devices (SPDs) near to the equipment that should be protected. Normally, surge protective devices should be installed at the ac and dc side of the inverters (Class I) and additional SPDs should be placed at the string boxes (Class I/ Class II).
Of course dedicated study should be carried out for every photovoltaic installation for both direct-stroke shielding and surge protection taking into account the acceptable risk of failure due to direct lightning strikes and the withstand voltage level of the protected equipment against fast-front overvoltages.
