• standard solution of zinc is available from merck or sigma aldrich. If you want to run aas with standard solution for calibration purpose then you must use these otherwise if you want to prepare synthetic waste contain zinc then 

take zinc oxide and dissolve with some H2SO4(little amount) e.g 1g ZnO require 3-6 drops and then dilute by use DI water.

But it should be Stoichiometry of 1000ppm Zn

Sir I tried this method but concentration I got was not accurate ..I want to know the exact values of ZnO and acid and water

Method 1 (Using AAS to make 1000ppm Zn trail and error method)

At the time of running AAS you can get concentration graph from that you can find how much concentration need to make 1000ppm.

Method 2(Stoichiometry and % of Zn)

If you take ZnO to prepare Zn solution

ZnO contains 80.311% of Zn remaining Oxygen

i.e, (65.38/81.408) * 100 = 80.311%

we take 1g of ZnO to make stock then it contains 803ppm of Zn

then 1000/803=1.24533g of ZnO contains 1000ppm of Zn

in AAS H, N, O,S no one is matter because they are not detected by the instrument so don't worry about these

take 1.24533g and dissolve it with a small amount of H2SO4 and make for 1L by using DI water.

Thankyou soo much Vinod sir. but i tried this similar method by dissolving ZnO in 5M HCl instead of H2SO4 and got no results. But i will try by using H2So4 also.

Hi Sehaspreet,

When you say that you 'get no result' using ZnO and HCl, do you mean that you see no Zn in solution, or that it is not the expected concentration?  If you have no signal, changing the acid will not solve the problem.The indication is that it is a problem with the AAS in measuring Zn.  Have you some way to check?
