I am trying to polymerize unpurified CNSL using formaldehyde anyone can please kindly guide with the procedure. In which ratio should I take CNSL: Formaldehyde : Acid/ Base anyone please kindly reply'

Use a CNSL to formaldehyde molar ratio of about 1:0.8 to 1:1 with either ~1% succinic acid as an acid catalyst or 0.6–1 g/L NaOH as a base catalyst. Polymerize at 50–60°C for around 6 hours, adjusting conditions based on desired resin type.

Add CNSL to a 3-necked round-bottom flask equipped with a mechanical stirrer, thermometer, and reflux condenser. Heat the CNSL to 50–60 °C with constant stirring. Add the formaldehyde (usually as 37% solution) slowly over 10–20 minutes. Add NaOH (10%) dropwise to catalyze the reaction. Maintain temperature between 60–80 °C for 2–4 hours. The reaction will proceed with gradual viscosity increase. Check for gelation. After desired viscosity or solid content is reached, neutralize with dilute acetic acid (if needed) and cool.
