I'm doing research along mountanous roads. One of my variable is the appearance of fog along these roads but meteorological department didn't have fog data. Do anybody knows how to predict fog using common weather information such as temperature, rainfall, humidity etc?
Wind Direction, Wind Velocity, Aerosol monitoring and visibility with transmissometer data can be helpful in the prediction of Fog.

I was a weather forecaster some time for the Canadian Gov. and I did develop a program to forecast radiation fog. Here is attached the program for different locations of eastern Canada. You can adopt the program for you locality.
Basically, to forecast radiation fog overnight you need
1) the sunset temperature, 2) the dew point temperature at sunset,
3) the best day time visibility (say today), 4) c loud type and amount , 5) length of the night, 6) sunset time 7) wind speed.
These are the inputs of the shell script included here.

I was also a pilot long time ago and in the weather book for pilot they have the following which is an interesting summary:
Radiation Fog: "On clear nights, with relatively little to no wind present, radiation fog may develop. Usually, it forms in low-lying areas like mountain valleys. This type of fog occurs when the ground cools rapidly due to terrestrial radiation, and the surrounding air temperature reaches its dew point. As the sun rises and the temperature increases, radiation fog lifts and eventually burns off"
Advection Fog: "When a layer of warm, moist air moves over a cold surface, advection fog is likely to occur. Unlike radiation fog, wind is required to form advection fog. Winds of up to 15 knots allow the fog to form and intensify. Advection fog is common in coastal areas where sea breezes can blow the air over cooler landmasses."
Upslope Fog: "...occurs when moist, stable air is forced up sloping land features like a mountain range. This type of fog also requires wind for formation and continued existence. Upslope and advection fog, unlike radiation fog, may not burn off with the morning sun, but instead can persist for days. They can also extend to greater heights than radiation fog."
Steam Fog (my favorite): "(AKA Sea Smoke) forms when cold, dry air moves over warm water. As the water evaporates, it rises and resembles smoke. This type of fog is common over bodies of water during the coldest times of the year. Low-level turbulence and icing are commonly associated with steam fog"

Thanks for your explanation. I think along mountainous roads, we should increase the divice to capture weather information like you suggest before predicting fog. This is because if we drive along mountainous roads, the many road section with upgrade and downgrade (follow the exisiting topography) and every section give different condition of fog. For example, top of crest might have higher probability of fog compared with sag section.
Temperature, Wind Speed, Relative Humidity and Clear sky will probably predict the fog in particular season
