Performing an operational wash on filters in a drinking water treatment plant is essential to maintain efficiency and prevent clogging.

Monitor Filter Performance – Check pressure drop, turbidity, or flow rate to determine if a wash is needed.

Isolate the Filter – Shut off inlet and outlet valves to take the filter offline.

Drain Excess Water – Lower the water level to the recommended backwash start level.

Backwash with Clean Water – Pump filtered water in reverse to remove trapped particles.

Use Air Scouring (if applicable) – Inject air to break up compacted debris in the filter media.

Adjust Backwash Flow Rate – Maintain an appropriate velocity to fluidize and clean the media without loss.

Rinse Cycle – Allow clean water to flow through the filter to remove remaining debris.

Check Effluent Quality – Ensure turbidity and particle levels return to acceptable limits.

Return to Service – Gradually reintroduce the filter into operation.

Record & Monitor – Log backwash details and observe filter performance post-wash.
