Negativity can be countered first and foremost by gratitude, if we see the simple fact of being alive for another day as a blessing in its own right. Then we begin from a point of gratitude which is a slid step away from negativity. Then we ask how might we share the blessing of our lives though our work, we seek in some way to be a blessing to others. That is in it self a positive mind set that takes us another step away from negativity.
Therefore to step away from negativty is to step away from our selves as the focal point of our day. Look outwards and upwards as we walk into the light, that light refracts though us to reach those around us.
It is really a toll order to resist negative attitude. I try to focus on the positive things around me to keep me going. I also try to find positives in the negative attitudes

Try saying "Yes" to opportunities that we are presented with. I recommend watching the movie "Yes Man". It has a wonderful massage for pessimists who say 'No' to life and are living a lonely life.
