Matrix converter is an AC-AC converter and it consists of bi-directional switches and these pair of switch are connected either in common emitter or common collector mode. Two different issues in Matrix converter are:
1. Avoid short circuit on the matrix converter input line.
2. Avoid open circuit on the matrix converter output lines.
In overlap current commutation, the incoming cell is fired before the outgoing cell is switched off and this would result in line-line short circuit.

A dead-time is required to compensate for the equivalent inductance at the input of the matrix converter. The dead-time is a non-ideal timing delay in which current is allowed to freewheel naturally through freewheeling diodes while none of the transistors are forced on. Obviously this has an effect on the harmonics in your output.
