I would like to know the mechanical strength of single ZnO nanorod of 1 micron length and 100 nm diameter. Is it possible to measure? How?

You can try nano-indentation. Also, since the nono rod may be placed at unknown location on a substrate, you will have to probe every possible point in the vicinity of the sample until you get a different readout (which will correspond to the nono rod, provided the substrate is uniform in mechanical properties). Then you can subtract the background signal that was recorded at the positions where there was no nano rod. Hope that helps.

Nanoindentation with cylindrical indenter gives the better results.
Thank you very much for the valuable suggestions. However, the idea from David Taylor could be more appropriate to measure the strength of vertically aligned single ZnO NRs. Thank you very much Prof. David!
