Wind power generation is one of the most important renewable energy forms and it has seen an ever-increasing development in the past decades.
Calculation of Spinning Reserve for Renewable based Power system:
Spinning reserve is defined as the unused capacity of connected and synchronized generation, which can be instantaneously utilized in response to a disturbance or activated on decision of the system operator
The traditional method for determining the spinning reserve amount PTSR for a given demand forecast d and time t is to set it equal to the capacity of the largest online generator:
PTSR≥max(utiPmaxi)
where uti is unit commitment for generation unit i at time t, and Pmaxi is the capacity of generating unit i. This method ensures that no load has to be reduced if any single generator becomes unavailable. It does not account for the probability of outages or the cost of providing spinning reserve.
Another popular method is a particle swarm optimization method, which doesn’t presuppose any conditions for the model and no approximations and limitations are required for the characteristic of the objective function and search space. The particle swarm optimization, first proposed by Kennedy and Eberhart is a population-based optimization method which can generate a high-quality
solution within shorter computation time and exhibits a more stable convergence characteristic than other stochastic methods.
