How to measure gain on the Nd doped glass sample?

I have a glass slab of 2mm thickness, i need to measure gain on the 1057nm wavelength. But for now i see only absorption on this wavelength. Probe beam is modulated and sync with PD. Pump and probe beam intersect inside meadium with very good accuracy.

Also in this case if i need to lower average pump power is it suitable to put modulator in front of it?
