Over the years I have downloaded and stored hundreds of scientific articles in my computer. Now it is very tricky to keep them organized. Sometimes there are even duplicates. How do you efficiently organized your articles' directory/library? Are there some intuitive approaches or tips to deal with that? I am a Mac user.

I think that organising them by topic, category or title (alphabetically) is not a good approach.
Try looking into content addressable storage such as the Tagsistant file-system.
The idea is that all files are stored in such a way so that you do not access them by looking them up in a path of a predefined structure, but instead by tags.
Each article can be described by a number of tags. Tags do not need to be keywords that the author has specified, but your own method of tagging or labelling its content. This way, you can find articles with certain tags by looking them up in this special type of file-system. See This page for more information https://www.tagsistant.net.
Also, you can specify your own set of alias terms (synonyms for tag names) so that, when you look for files tagged with mathematics, you also get those tagged with math, calculus etc. if you link those tags as synonyms.
This is a useful approach because you can always add or remove certain tags from a file without having to move the file around and re-categorise it in different directory structures and paths.
