I am an undergraduate Mechanical Engineering student, and I want to learn FEM since it is not in our undergraduate curriculum and I wand to know how to learn it and which sciences I must have studied to start learning FEM and how to start it ?

Is there anything I have to learn and have sufficient knowledge in it before learning FEM ?! cuz I will be finishing my first year in mechanical engineering within 2 weeks from now.
Hi Omar,
You should know Linear Algebra (an undergraduate course is fine), since FEM is a technique for the solution of Differential Equations at least a first course in Differential Equations is also mandatory, Differential and Integral Calculus.
These topics, in my opinion, are the starting point.

Nicolas .. I already studied Linear Algebra, ODEs & PDEs and the first course in Theory of Structures and a course in Materials Testing .. I think it is sufficient according to ur view :)

Your course of material testing should be related with Linear Elasticity-
From google, Linear Elasticity is very complicated to be covered in first year (Huge piles of Math :D), we haven't studied any of it.
What was your books in "Theory of Structures" and "Materials Testing"?

Theory of Structures : a book very similar to Timoshenko S. P., Theory of Structures.
Hello... I'm a brazilian dentist, actually I'm professor in a State University, and I think the better way to know how to do FEM analysis is looking for teams that have similar problems and already do FEM analysis, since you can think in to solve your problem with elastic linear analysis and sometimes a non-linear analysis is more adequate for you. Look for institutional teams that had publishing interesting articles.
@Fellippo, I think that Omar want to know the technique not just "drive" a particular software.
Fellipo, Thanks for ur advice. but as Nicolas said I wanna learn FEM not to be data entry boy using ANSYS :( of course I have to learn a particular software but after learning the science itself so as not to make fatal mistakes which would lead to misbehavior of the model.

Btw Materials Testing course contents are : Mechanical behaviour of materials (elastic and plastic behaviour), Mechanical testing (tension, compression, bending, shear, hardness, impact, creep, fatigue), Type of fracture, Property/structure relationship, Wear, non destructive tests, Corrosion and corrosion prevention.
oh oh oh. wait a minute guys. here is a simple solution to Omar's quest. go to youtube and search for lectures on FEM. you will find very good lectures by Prof. Krishnakumar from IIT Madras, India. I will guarantee you that you wont be disappointed at all. There is also a course on Advanced FEM.

I am learning FEM with ( Applied Finite Element Analysis by Larry J. Segerlind) . It easy book to understand FEM.
There should be a good knowledge of mathematics, vibrations, structure, cfd, fdm and it actaully depends on what type of problem one is dealing with. The finite element analysis is the simulation of any given physical phenomenon using a numerical technique called finite element method (FEM). Engineers use this method to reduce the number of physical prototypes and experiments, and to optimize components in their design phase to develop better products, faster.
Read Basics of Finite Element Analysis by Nachiketa Tiwari, from the department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT, Kanpur. He has many videos but extremely easy to understand. You won't regret it.
