We're using a tool consisting of 15 items, each rated on a 7-point Likert scale (1 = Never to 7 = Always), giving a total possible score ranging from 15 to 105. Therefore, the theoretical midpoint of the scale is 60 .. However the statistician calculated and used a cutoff point of 40 to classify participants into low and high groups
A reviewer has raised a concern, stating that the cutoff should be at the midpoint (60) .. How can I appropriately justify the use of a cutoff lower than the midpoint? Could it be supported by sample distribution characteristics, previous literature or pilot data?
