Hi,
Please could someone give me some detailed instructions how to install Pymol onto a PC (Windows 10) from the open source files that are available? It's very difficult to know which files are needed and how to carry out the installation.

You can get pre-compiled binaries for open-source PyMOL as well as many other scientific packages from this site: https://www.lfd.uci.edu/~gohlke/pythonlibs/
The main drawback with using the educational version distributed by pymol.org is that in that version, ray-tracing is disabled. This is no problem if you use PyMOL just to visualize and analyze macromolecular structures. However, if you wish to generate top quality images, you either need to pay for their incentive version or go for the open-source version.
I'm not able to help on getting pymol installed onto Windows. However, if you are open to using Linux (which I highly encourage in any case), then the installation with all of the necessary libraries is pretty straight forward, especially if you use Conda for the Python packages.
One idea would be to create a virtual machine with Ubuntu or Mint on your Windows, and try it out there. Schrödinger has done a nice job at keeping an open-source version available, for which I am grateful since it is a great tool for teaching and in research. Please see the attached file for instructions on installing PyMol-2.1.0 on Windows-7 (32-bit or 64-bit) or Windows-10 (64-bit). I used PyMol-2.1.0 with Python-2.7.18 for compatibility with 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows.

Yan Zhang Sorry, no idea, since the software has apparently been "successfully installed". I can only suggest the usual potential fixes for otherwise inexplicable software problems - uninstall/remove and re-install with a re-boot in between, "run as admin", temporarily disable your antivirus software, etc.
