Methyltretbutyl ether (MTBE), which is a colorless flammable liquid with a characteristic odor, is considered to be one of the most widely used means for increasing the level of octane number. MTBE is characterized by a high octane number and non-toxicity. With the addition of 10-15% MTBE in gasoline, the growth of the octane number is about 6-12 units. Most high-octane gasoline is produced using this or other similar additives of the ether class. The disadvantages of MTBE include its high volatility and the possibility of evaporation from gasoline in hot weather.
