Graphite is a brittle material having its density, mechanical properties are very important for nuclear reactor usage. I know the classical manufacturing of graphite. Does degree of graphitization help to improve the mechanical properties, why so? The purity of carbon content also play some role, but how?

For commercial nuclear reactor that use graphite (instead of water) as a neutron moderator, addition of silicon can improve its mechanical properties just like using silicon carbide (SiC) in gas-cooled nuclear reactors.
For the second part of your question, the presence of impurities in graphite can degrade its capability of a neutron moderator.
