I am trying to convert ASTER level 1T data using NASA's HDF-Eos tool from HDF to GeoTiff but it appears that the GeoTiff files created by the software are not correct as they wouldn't open in ERDAS imagine. ERDAS imagine gives the error "Unsupported compression type" whenever I try to open them. The GeoTiffs can be opened in QGIS and ArcGIS but I cannot access the raster bands within them. I am using HEGTool version 2.13 in windows. Kindly assist.
Which link did you use to download L1T? I remember with L1B and L1A I had the options of either ordering in HDF or GeoTIFF formats via NASA Earth Science Data Search and Reverb ECHO link. But I am not sure if LPDAAC has changed any policies ever since all ASTER data was made freely available to the public from 1st April, 2016 onwards. Try with the attached links and let me know.

Use ENVI. There is a standard converter to convert a HDF format to GEOTIFF format.
Thank you for your replies. I downloaded the imagery from earthexplorer.usgs.gov. I have managed to convert them to .img using ERDAS Imagine but the TIR bands lack a projection system. Any ideas?
Try ENVI as Rahul suggested. It can do both the conversion as well as assign a projection. Check for the 'Edit ENVI header' tool.
Qgis uses gdal by default. You can open HDF formats and select a particular layer or all layers inside HDF file to load into QGIS view.
For Batch processing use gdal_translate function available in Processing Toolbox of Qgis.
If you have access to Idrisi Selva, you will find an excellent import module via File - Import - Government Data Provider Formats - HDFEOS. This will import the file into Idrisi format (.rst) which can easily be exported in GEOTIFF Format
