I want to determine the amount of terpene compounds in different plant parts. Can anyone suggest a method for extracting all terpenes? Is methanolic extraction of powdered samples good enough for this purpose?
Hexane is first choice for terpenes extraction. Supercritical CO2is another one. Diethyl ether, Pet Ether are some of solvents which are non polar and have low boiling points are useful for terepene extraction. Attaching article for your acknowledgement.
The powdered of each different plant parts were extracted separately with 95% ethanol then, fractionated with petroleum ether, n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, ethanol, n- butanol and methanol. The solvents were recovered under reduced pressure. The hexane soluble part was filtered, distilled and concentrated to obtain the residue for GC- MS analysis.
for extration of terpens started from less polar solvent to high polar solvents and check each fraction by GC. first 100% hexane -9% hexane and 1%methnol......each step incresed polarity ...one stage 100 % methanol .........complete fractination of plants parts..
