There are several ecological indicies helping to estimate the succession cycle stage in soil, namely in the detritus food web. Parameters of the indices: nematode taxa list, their trophic groups, number=density for cm3 and m2, and the relative time of their appearance in a succession (stage). These indicies based on the conception of "guilds" of Prof. Howard Ferris, G.Yeates, R. Van De Goede, T. Bongers and their successors. Practically the primary data are the relative numbers of nematode specimens belonging to guilds, which taxa list (to family and generic level) is established by feeding-type specialists and approved by the scientific community. Of course in many cases the feeding sources of some taxa are much more flexible, than accepted in the official typology. Such indicies are proposed on the ideology which is very similar to a conception of Shannon index where taxa in a formula are replaced to guilds. But for the ecosystem it is important to estimate the energy flux via microbial community, using the more direct way, for example using respiration rates of the taxa or guilds. For such assesments it is necessary to know the technique to estimate the respiration on the small number of nematodes belonging to one species, let say 5-10 specimens of body length 0.700 mm, body diameter 0.020 mm and the density of 1.15 g/cm3. May you please recommend such technique using modern electronic simple devices, for very small organisms in small numbers, not for mass cultures, but just picked out from humus soil or decaying wood?
