Student - teacher relationship is similar to a business or customer service relationship. If we choose a product over another, the product/service should meet our needs and expectations. Here are some tips from my personal experience as a teacher;
1. Be genuine & trustworthy
2. Understand and focus the need of students (just try to understand why are they coming to your sessions). You classroom is not a place to showcase your knowledge and skill.
3. Be up-to-date with the topic
4. Convey them a feeling that you are there for them
5. Carefully align your classroom activities to the learning outcomes
6. Implement appropriate & effective active learning strategies in the classroom
7. Make students feel that each one of them are an important member & contributor to the classroom activities.
In the nutshell, there is no one-shot solution to engage and attract students in the classroom. It is the culmination of a number of well-knit activities and efforts. Just try to place yourself as your student and think what would you have preferred in a given situation.
