In my opinion, during the studies, during the educational process, students should be explained the essence and positive aspects of social entrepreneurship. Within the subject of Entrepreneurship, one should indicate the important role of social entrepreneurship in the context of activating economic growth in the social market economy. It is necessary to indicate the essence and significance of social economic entities, the importance of social aspects in business, corporate social responsibility, environmental social responsibility, etc. as important factors in the development of modern, contemporary developing economies. During their studies, students should learn and complete internships in social enterprises, where human capital is one of the most important production factors. Students should learn about examples of companies developing as startups within social entrepreneurship. Many examples of this type of companies function in technological industries, new Internet media, innovative technologies, research companies operating in marketing, consulting companies operating in support services for human capital development, etc. In addition, students should be indicated the support system from state institutions for business development, startups developed as part of social entrepreneurship, including the system of financial grants and startup funds offered by public institutions, agencies of the ministries of economy and entrepreneurship, and other institutions and economic entities. In addition, the university should develop cooperation with this type of business entities, startup funds, government agencies for business support, chambers of commerce in order to develop the offer of academic business incubators so that students receive support during their studies in the event of a desire to establish their own company, create a startup, a company operating, among others . as part of social entrepreneurship.

First, there has to be some institutional support for legitimacy and reputation of the social entrepreneur. Currently, our hero is the rich person or who has a high position in social or economic ranking. This cannot change unless broader changes occurs.

Second, collaboration between universities and media can be useful. Imagine, the hero in the television play is the girl or boy who has special contribution to the social entrepreneurship rather than serving self interest and showing ruthless behaviour in business deals.

Third, it can be useful if economic and social goals are aligned. It might help, although it is difficult.

Last, I think it will be useful to produce narratives in general discourse. As we know, different cultures have different perspectives on heroes. Indeed, it is difficult but not impossible to set direction and act upon it. Patience is required as it is a gradual process. Someday, most student will be keen to join that direction.

Social entrepreneurship doesn't bring huge earnings for an entrepreneur him/herself, which makes it unsuitable for an early career entrepreneur.

Agree with Tariq's suggestions! The role of government, as well as institutional support, is the crucial key.

It will be more meaningful, if the professors can motivate graduate students to involve the social entrepreneurship activities by integrating students' research learning and their career development.

Show this type of Entrepreneurship as a marketing strategy that make money 💰 supporting and encouraging students aren't enough, so social Entrepreneurship will be as a sub-project for any Entrepreneur.

Social entrepreneurship has different dimensions. Make sure which dimension you are expecting in education.

I also encourage students to build their networks and to learn about the challenges of starting a social enterprise from local social entrepreneurs (a practitioner's perspective).

Good question! I would say that, if you can show to students what they can benefit from social entrepreneurship, then you have already motivate them to involve in social entrepreneurship. Otherwise, I doubt how you can succeed. These are people with higher self interest desire! They are also disadvantaged in social capital which is key for social entrepreneurship success.

Social Entrepreneurship is an EMPTY concept. Go back to Adam Smith;s original example of the French baker... he is NOT working to make the world better, simply selling bread to sell to other ignorer to put money on the table to feed his family and pay his rent.... But the "externalities" of his efforts flow to the community at large...he can pay his rent and others can make and sell sandwiches, etc etc The multiplier effect... So lets focus on the basics and not worry about saving the world. Bill Gates made billions not by "saving the world" but making and selling a product everyone uses and with his billions he now uses his fortune to do good for others....

But, like Bill Gates as success commercial entrepreneur, there are vivid examples of social entrepreneurs who have been able to make the world better by addressing social and environment issues such as Mohammed Yunus, who helped millions poor people free themselves from poverty and transferred them from poverty and unemployment to be producers and entrepreneurs by starting their own ventures.

In addition, the concept of social entrepreneurship is an emerging area within a variety of domains: business strategy, entrepreneurship, public sector management, community development, not-for-profit marketing, sociology, political science, economics and education (Short et al., 2009; Weerawardena & Sullivan Mort, 2006).

This means that social entrepreneurship can be observed within or could span the business, non-profit, or governmental segments seeking to render a positive social transformation. Thank you.

To Abdo Hasan-Harasi... appreciate your comments. I understand your admiration of Mohammed Yunus and applaud his work. I do have one followup question..,., where did M. Yunus obtain the funds to help millions move out of poverty? I also suspect that few, if any of the millions, spent much effort thinking about "social entrepreneurshiping" but were more concerned about moving forward to a more sustainable life!

It is important to develop in our students social conscience, from the first years of education.

Teach them the importance of the common welfare, as a greater good within our society.

It is important to show and teach them to develop innovative business models that generate opportunities, such as collaborative economies, which allow responsible consumption of products and services, as well as the reuse of elements in an eco-friendly way.

I suggest to encourage them with the example. If the proffesor is related with a social activity, it would encourage students to do the same. But, for a student to choose social entrepreneurship it is neccesary that he/she has the economic possibilities to sustain him/her in the firsts years of entrepreneurship. If not, for more positive actitude and desire to do it,it will be very difficult for him/her because he/she also has other basic needs to satisfy.

I recently attended a workshop on the above subject, here are some helpful points:

* develope tailored and appropriate curriculum development with industry involvement.

* entrepreneurship education and development, shifting education focus from problem finding to problem solving of existing challenges.

* Early and frequent exposure of young persons to business ideas generation, skills training, etc.

* Creating a go to support centre for persons who wise to start a business.

* Mentorship and guidance on funding opportunities.

Take them out of the classroom. Introduce them to the world. Entrepreneurship of any kind cannot be learned inside a class. It is happening right now infront of our eyes. All we as educators need to do is to introduce it to the students. Those who have a higher empathy would immediately be drawn towards social entrepreneurship. There is no need to encourage each and everyone but a select few who can bring about a significant change in people's lives.

Social Entrepreneurship has two contradicting challenges. One is sustainability and the other one whether it needs to have a business model.

Umesh above was right-on... "Entrepreneurship of any kind cannot be learned" period! The kid or grown person needs to be able to take risk!!! That given... why social entrepreneurship... want to make a contribution to society follow people like Bill Gates, etc... do something practical that everyone wants, make a fortune, and spread your wealth... that is what social entrepreneurship is all about!!!

From my personal experience as a social entrepreneur, I think this is an excellent question but maybe not the right question. University students should be guided to be social responsible at both individual and firm level, no matter they choose to work as a social entrepreneur or an employee at a social responsible (or potentially responsible) company after graduation. From this view, sooner or later, only social responsible companies (including starups) could attract talented people to work for them, that in turn create dynamic capabilities as the key competitve edge for the company to survive, sustain and succeed, then attract more talented people to work for. During this positive-feedback loop, more earnings, more happiness, more impact, more meaning life... will for sure come along like 'side-effect' for a long run.

The biggest challenge is how to operate social entrepreneur as a business model.
