Cast iron molds - being filled by large sand particles - are toughly degraded by erosion. Since the erosion is of brittle type toughness of the surface is of a great importance. Hardness is also important in a lower degree. What would be your solution to have a tough and hard surface on cast iron. The cost of the surface improvement is also important.
Hello. Shot peening could be one of the answers to your problem. There is a large amount of literature of surface toughness improvement obtained with shot peening. Shot peening induces compressive residual stress on the surface, leading to a better surface toughness and fatigue resistance.

Use of coatings could be an alternative solution. There are numerous coating techniques suggested in the literature. The composition of the coating should be selected based upon the operating conditions (erosion parameters) to which the component is subjected to.
