I would like to disassemble Cylindrical cells (LFP) in an Argon filled atmosphere to study the Cathode. I would like to know the procedure in steps to do it. I would also like to know the safety measures, instruments needed.
What will be hazard if I do it in complete discharged state at very low C-rate?
Is overdischarge a good idea for this procedure?
I believe overdischarge will complete drain the anode and poses less risk of short circuit.

We made this procedure with partners long time ago. We used argon glowbox and hand battery drill with small milling cutter. It is necessary to cut the lid on the thickness of the case. Find on the Internet drawings or scheme of such a battery and everything will become clear. After disassemble all inner parts were packed separatelly in sealed polyethylene bags, so that these were then stored in an argon medium. In these bags you can make even XRD. Also I recommend just discharge the element before disassembling.
You are right - the most dangerous part is the anode (carbon?). If there is lithium in it, it flares up on the air. I do not believe that lithium can be completely removed by superdischarge. Therefore, you need to think over the tactics of the subsequent analysis.
