For my academic project, I am given photoes taken by a camera that is placed below the submarine, where the camera takes images of the sea bed, I was wondering if there is an image processing approach to determine the distance of the camera from the sea bed?
You can use triangle similarity, check here. You do need to divide the distance with refractive index of sea water to get the true distance.

I've looked at that exact link and the triangle similarity approach, the problem is im am only provided with images of the sea bed, I have no information about the width and initial distance of any object in the sea bed.
If you have some information about the motion of the camera/submarine, you may be able to obtain the required distance using stereo vision or structure from motion type of methods.

Do you mean you want to know just the speed at which the vehicle is moving?
You would need the distance the submarine traveled between the two time instances when images were taken (if you have the speed and the time used, then you can calculate the distance). Camera intrinsic parameters may either be provided or estimated.
So the images we got are taken every second, and I was told that the sub is about 1-1.5 meters/s
