It is better to carry out Atterberg limits, particle size distribution, suction tests, consolidated undrained trixaxial test, specific gravity test and hydraulic conductivity test. Slope angle is very important factor. Any angle over 26.5 degrees (1 V: H 2) is regarded as steep slope which is susceptible to landslide.

You might find some interest in our Watershed Restoration After Calamity in Researchgate with reference to some landslides. Certain soil types are more susceptible including colluvial soils. Soil plasticity was an indicator the soil scientists and geologists mentioned. LiDAR coverage can be helpful, but we also used aerial photo stereo pairs in the early days to help identify potential unstable areas. The field indicators mentioned in paper were helpful. Also understanding the potential changes associated with land clearing, road construction, mining and other activities would help evaluate and make adjustments in activities in areas with sensitive geology and/or soils. Unintended hydrologic modifications can also contribute to stability issues, or could also be used to reduce them such as when underground waters saturating unstable slope can be brought to the surface, or unstable conditions are avoided with road and harvest activities, etc.
