I don’t think there is a specific criteria in designing the groundwater monitoring network. It depends on the objective of your study and the nature of your aquifer system. If your target is sustainability and groundwater response to rainfall, the monitoring network should be designed in the way it represents the heterogeneity of your aquifer system like: it should consider a combination of different parameters like geology, meteorological conditions, soil types, land use, physiographic characteristics, topography, surface water, and different climate variables. If the monitoring objective is regared to pollution the designing of your groundwater network might depend on the potential source of pollution.
