Hi everyone. Does anyone know how to hold the powders (10um) when doing nanoindentation? I have mixed the powders with epoxy, and let it dry, then polished the mixture, but I never got converged data by using CSM method. Now, I think maybe the epoxy is too soft compared with my powders. So I would like to know what material and method we usually used when doing the nanoindentation tests of powders?

Do you have bulk material for comparison? You may be able to compare the indentation modulus between your powder and bulk, they should be really close if the epoxy has no influence. Just to check quickly if you have a systematic issue in your system.
Still, measured hardness values can be quite volatile depending on which microstructure element you acutally hit (soft matrix, carbide, precipitate, ...). So an average of approx. 25 values should usually give you a good estimate of hardness, if you placed your indentations in a characteristic distribution of microstructural elements.
Indentation modulus is a very local property which mainly depends on the crystal phase you hit, if the indentation is much smaller than the microstructure element
