There are now a number of commercial companies organising conferences all over the world. They do little in terms of organisation - they invite the speakers most at their own expense and only provide the venue. Even the moderators are sometimes absent. The conference basically runs itself and they pocket the money. Certificates are given out for attendance, meals are provided which are barely enough. The registration is exorbitant, so watch out for them!
Very good question. I think that in order to detect the profit, you should have experience and intuition to see that the goal is to get the money out to the attendees. As you say, the first point is the excessive cost for attendance, secondly, normally the lecturers repeat and repeat in multiple conferences the same arguments and even the same presentations with pretty fashionable names and hollow content. And finally, suspect if before you start they give you the attendance certificate.
Yes they send out the invitations but no rebate. The topics are related - maybe. They will run different conferences at the same venue in various rooms / halls with the same coordinating team handling all registrations. The hotel bookings are messed up, the timings are hay-wire and of course don't expect any answer after it is over.
