What are possible plating or any other surface engineering solutions to decrease surface degradation of cast iron molds through erosion by sand particles. As you may know, large sand particles result in the brittle mode of friction, so a tough surface is required. What suggestions do you have to obtain a tough surface on cast iron. How tough is an electroless plating in the composite and/or heat-treated mode?
I believe you mean abrasive wear of the moulds because fretting is a special type of wear in materials in contact loaded by small amplitude high frequency oscillations.
Electroless as well as electroplating are not effective against abrasion. Only hard coatings are like those made by sputtering or diffusion.
