I am about to start my thesis using LS5/LS8 time series. Since I only used single-dated images so far, I am not quite sure how to approach the masking of clouds/shadows etc since I will use all the available data for each year. Is there any introduction literature I might refer to or has anybody a hint how to approach this?
Depending on your methodology you can use the quality band that is packed with the Landsat Images that you've downloaded. You can use this band to mask or to give weights to the regarding pixel values within your process. Cloud Masking can be done using a simple band ratio taking into consideration the IR bands. However, it depends on the application i.e what data you need to extract from LandSat Imagery. Temporal resolution of LandSat can also help you as i said based on your application.
