Scheduled based MAC protocols have capability to deal with synchronous and asynchronous communication separately. If both features should be included in single MAC protocol then what types of changes should be done in the structure of MAC protocol?
You can use both features in single MAC protocol. When you use asynchronous communication then Short preamble can be sent on medium but sending the data, synchronous communication can be initiated. So, both features can work in single MAC protocol.
Synchronous Medium Access Control protocol can be thought of like railways network where synchronization is must whereas Asynchronous can be thought of like vehicles travelling on road where they can originate at any time. So, in order to mix both if synchronous is not in use then asynchronous can be used, for that railways track should be compatible for vehicles on road and it will be for small duration. One can conclude that these can be combined by giving priority to the synchronous protocols and then to the asynchronous protocols. Modalities of frame structure, packet size etc. needs to be carried out cautiously.
