I am trying to create a voltage heat map of a distribution network in Matlab/Python.
I have the values of bus voltage magnitude and angle but cannot plot them in a heat map.
The objective is to analyse the peak load of the LV network.
Can anyone suggest me some pointers? It would be really great.
Having a look at the annotated heat map plots example in MatplotLib documentation might get you going in the right direction, but I'm curious to know if a network visualisation with colored or sized nodes(or both) (depending on voltage / angle) might not also suit your purposes. To my mind this might offer some additional benefits such as being able to see which nodes might be contributing to peak load, high load nodes clustered together etc. I must confess to not having made network diagrams directly in python though although there are libs like networkx around., I typically use Neo4j for bigger stuff or Cytoscape would also suit your needs if you wanted to go down the network visulisation route.

Well my objective is to visualize voltage around each node with a gradient color. e.g. red zones are nodes with intense loading while greens have light loads for example.
i have the distribution network overlayed and the result of the bus voltages but could plot the heat maps showing the peak loads.
would take a look at python libs as suggested.
Any clustermap/heatmap or similar can be easily made if the data is structured in a matrix. If you ave the data, try to arrange the rows and columns in a data frame. Rows and columns would represent the x and y axis of the heatmap while the values on the row & column intersection would be the heatmap value based on scale/colour/size etc.
Matplotlib & seaborn (python) can be used for heatmaps. A clustermap can also be made which is clustered heatmap. However, R would be much easier if you are not very familiar to python and its libs.
I need to overlay the heat map of the distribution network to something similar as the attached image. i already have the bus voltage angle loas etc values in csv.
the network diagram must be overlayed on heat map.

I don't think it is possible to overlay the network diagram over a heatmap, or I have not seen that kind of visualization yet. So, I would recommend not to try merging visualization which are rendered by two different data processing methods.
However, may be you can do it if you make some new method or find a way to toggle current methods/packages in a way which could do the task you are aiming for.
It would be interesting to see if you find a way to accomplish it.
But you can include the visual attributes like node size or shape which can connect your network diagram with your metadata information.
Or do not think about overlaying and find a way of visualization which can use all the information in the visualization.
Heatmaps are generally made and are useful for the dataset which is very large. For small datasets, sometimes heatmaps are not the preferred method of visualization.
