12 February 2021 3 10K Report

Hello,

I am running into an issue and do not know how to cite / reference correctly here.

APA states that instruments and measurements need to be referenced with the author's name. At the same time, I should only include references I have read myself.

As part of a systematic review, I am creating a list of measurements used in the primary studies. Unfortunately, I have no access to some of the instruments or instrument manuals or even instrument publications. Examples are provided below.

What is the formally correct way to reference these instruments?

- Not mentioning the instruments' author is wrong

- only writing the authors name and the year without a reference in the reference list is wrong

- is the 'as cited in' option applicable here?

Thank you very much for your help.

EXAMPLES:

  • one instrument leads to a dead page via DOI

Motta, R. W., Hafeez, S., Sciancalepore, R., & Diaz, A. B. (2001). Discriminant validation of the Modified Secondary Trauma Questionnaire. Journal of Psychotherapy in Independent Practice, 2(4), 17–25. https://doi.org/10.1300/J288v02n04_02)

  • One instrument is cited as an online source, but the test is not online anymore.
