At the moment CO2 sequestration has no economic value. In some countries ( e.g. UK), if you generate electricity using fossil fuel you pay a tax ( or call it a fine), which is known as the green tax. This tax money is paid to the producers of renewable energy.
In one case in Norway the operator ( Shell) decided to capture and inject CO2 in one of their oil producing wells.
There are many project to find economic way to capture CO2 and store it underground. At Brunel University we are trying by using multi scale computation to determine the safety of long term storage of CO2.
Until all governments in the world agree that production of CO2 causes damage and attache a good tax on it, every research remains on the paper. IF you levy too low tax electricity generation companies rather pay the tax as they pass it to the consumer. Too high tax would kill renewable, as it will be economical to capture CO2.
As per the current world scenario carbon stocking is not too far. Though there are ample renewable energy technologies exploited there is still not a major reduction i CO2 emission. For you question, I would recommend that concentrating on the following areas could help if you intend to device a scheme or algorithm for carbon sequestration
1. The largest methane (21 times harmful than CO2) emission is via paddy fields. An effective mechanism of tapping it can make huge difference.
2. The tones of carbon sequestered from various plantations like a seasonal crop like cane, banana or the hard wood pine plantations like casuarina, eucalyptus which are attributed to high CO2 absorption reflecting on their high calorific value can be accounted.
3. The amount of CO2 converted into dry ice and as industrial gas instead of emitting them as such into the environment by thousands of distilleries through out the world could be accounted for such sequestration as CO2 is the fermentation gas evolved while producing ethanol, acetone, butanol.
4. The carbon sequestration by converting waste biomass into valuable products like bales, briquettes and char could make a huge dip in emission.
