Hello everyone, I am working on testing the upper thermal limit of a kind of chub. I desire to set the speed of temperature increase at 0.3 °C/min. But it seems hard to control the steady temperature increase from 20 °C to 40 °C. Does anyone have any experience about it? Really appreciate it!
Based on the specific heat capacity for water and the increase rate you provided, the heater element rating you need to increase temperature by 0.3 °C in 1 minute is 0.021 kW•L^-1 times the volume of water in liters. So for instance if you are using a 100 watt heater, starting with a water volume of 4.76 L would allow you to increase from 20 to 40°C at a rate of 0.3°C per minute.
Quick measurement upper thermal limits is by graded increase of ambient temperature by step-wise increase of temperature at a desired rate. In these tests the fish do not become fully acclimated to the testing thermal conditions. In case the tests are to be on fully thermally acclimated conditions the fish have to be exposed to step-wise increase by at least 1 degree Celsius per day - full thermal acclimation /adaptation time may vary depending on the ambient conditions.. I suggest that you refer to fish thermal acclimation/adaptation studies by J. R. Brett and F E J Fry - especially Brett (1952) and Fry (1947;1971).
