As far as I know faces of AE sensors are made mostly of two materials – metal (steel, titanium) or ceramics (further information can be usually found in a sensor’s datasheet). Both materials are rather chemically stable and most non-aggressive detergents are safe to use. Acetone and/or similar chemicals are also safe. I would avoid using abrasive chemicals.

Dry scratching is generally safe. However, some AE sensors are prone to shocks (this depends on their inner structure). Therefore it is advisable to avoid chiselling if possible. If the face of your sensor is made of ceramics, please mind that the ceramics is a brittle material and is more prone to cracking than steel/titanium.

Hint: If your measurement is performed at indoor temperature, you can use hot melt glue rather than a silicone compound. Hot melt glue can be taken out of the sensor’s face more easily than the silicone.

You can aply white spirit and special solvents manufactured by Silicon-Entferner and Soudal.
