I have four point scale and three constructs. One construct has much more items compared to the other two constructs. For instance, the construct A has 70 items, the construct B has 10 items, and the construct C has 10 items. Theoretically, someone can be considered as having good ability when he has the three constructs. When someone has a high score in the construct A (the majority of the responses are strongly agree), but very low in the construct B and the construct C, could he be classified in the high category?
Why are you attempting to create a 3-point score from continuous data? This will cause a serious loss of information.
since it is very common category, such as high ability, middle ability, and low ability
But then two people who are only a point apart on your full scale could end up in different categories, or two people who are apart would be lumped into the same score. That is what I mean by "lose information."
