I am working in modulation of phase with metasurfaces, previously in the regime of microondas, using metallic patches on dielectric substrates and varying the gap between the patches and the substrate as is shown in the attached file, where each value of gap is related to a value of phase.
Now I am trying to extend the analise to optical frequencies, there are a lot of papers on this subject that propose different structures for varying the phase and in them the transmission is calculated, I am doubting how such calculation is made, it comes from the calculation of the S-Parameters? and how must I set the conditions of simulation.

In CST you can calculate Transmission/Reflection from post processing--->Optical
it calculate from S parameter results.

The resonance for structure is set by frequency. It should be fixed. Even with Perfect E/H boundaries - you need to use 2 waveports.
Increase your frequency sweep to say more than 10GHz and when using for Floquet ports - plot S21 for mode 2 as well.

You can also design the structure in CST with periodic boundary conditions and then pass a plane wave through it (flouquet modes). Analysis in frequency domain is preferable for this kind of design. By varying the dimensions of the structure, you can observe how the phase of the transmission parameter is varying. The phase variation should be of 2*pi swing.
Please, how to plot the surface impedance of a patch metasurface vs patch length?
In fact, I am trying to plot the surface impedance of a metasurface made of metal patches. I want to use the formula Z = jZsqrt((phi/ko*a)^2-1). Using HFSS eigenmode solver, at a fixed frequency, i want to plot the phase difference phi across the unit cell as a function of "a", so that i will be able to plot the impedance from the formula above.
From my knowledge, we usually vary the phase to compute the eigen frequency. But for this case i am a little bit confuse.
