How to calculate the heat generation rate of rubber under non-sinusoidal deformation？?

I have seen two methods in papers to calculate heat generation in rubber under cyclic loading. One is a method where the strains are Fourier fitted and then superimposed; the other is calculated using the strain energy density. I am curious to know the difference between these two methods.
