Hi, I am doing a research on SCS mesoscale eddies. And I want to use EKE to charactrize these eddies. But I just know a simple formula EKE = 1/2(U^2+V^2)^0.5. Theoratically, Every eddy covers a region where every point has U V. How should I use these data to calculate?

What is the timescale of the Eddies you are interested in? if you know this. Use the band-pass filtering approach (for isolating the eddies) before calculating the Kinetic energy.
For example, if the eddy is (2 - 6days), filter your U and V wind using this band and then compute the KE. Your output becomes the EKE

Akintomide, thank you! Let me make it clear. The data used is provided by Aviso+ and time interval is a day. Now I have identified mesoscale eddies of South China Sea based on O-W method without considering the lifespan of these eddies. And I want to use EKE to charactrize each identified eddy. You konw, each eddy covers a region so there are many velocity data for each eddy. I wonder how I should deal with these data. I have read many papers but they didn't include detailed processes but a formula I have refered to above. Maybe it is fundermental, I hope you can help me!
