I agree with Dr. Constantin. An experimental physicist works on the basis of observation. On the basis of his knowledge and the observation he decides the next step towards achieving the target. Patience is must, because many times results are not as per your expectation. Once you achieve a target in an optimum time you are good experimentalist.
Theoretician works on the basis of asumption and calculations. The role of both the theoretician and experimentalist are important for the new inventions and discovery.
First you have to have a teacher who is proficient in experimentation; secondly, your current lab has money to buy common research equipment; again, you have to be in the lab often; finally, IQ is also critical. Haha
