I've designed a dual band circular patch antenna using DGS , which the 2nd resonant frequency having positive gain with radiation pattern perpendicular to patch but the 1st resonant frequency gives negative gain (-3.5 dB) which is max gain. After some tuning i'm getting positive gain but the main lobe direction is 140 degree.
The CST 2015 software is used for antenna design.
Kindly someone suggest how can i avoid the leakage of current below ground plane so that i get positive gain and proper radiation pattern on patch where main lobe direction should approximate 0 degree???
You don't say what design tool you have used, I suspect a commercial modelling package. Is your -3.5dB gain the max gain or just the gain in a specified direction? You need to say more to enable someone to give a helpful answer. A simple response is to increase the size of the groundplane.

Thank you for your response. CST 2016 is used for antenna design, the negative gain -3.5 dB is max gain at specified resonant frequency. I want to get positive gain on this frequency.

Looking at this problem from first principles then an isotropic antenna has a gain of 1 (0dB). Any directive antenna will have a gain greater than 1 (>0dB) in some directions and less than 1 (
your antenna must be having lower efficiency. design in properly. if possible check with other simulator also. what is the size of the ground plane in terms of wavelength corresponding to the frequency???? if it is small, enlarge the ground plane.
