I regularly use case studies to demonstrate the real life use of the content of the course or sometimes invite a guest lecturer from a company to credit the importance of these.

Besides these the word of mouth is one of the best branding ad for the course and the lecturer which suppoorts the social valuation of the topic itself amond the students.

A teacher has to give a number of examples both from past & present to simplify a point - which the teacher feels they may not easily understand. Give examples where some techniques have failed - the reasons thereof & those where they have succeeded & why. In this way the students will get the teacher's attention. Though such an action may ask for greater in put, but it's really worth.

Also, daily give a slightly intricate problem to the students to be worked out  so that the brighter ones which may take a lead, will accelerate others in the subject.

One may take the help of various videos to simplify certain points which the teacher think may not be easily understood by the students. 

It may about how to manage a teaching class and there are many pedagogical strategies and techniques, which can be used to manage the class. I think, as a learning facilitator, besides they have to be competent in the subject contents, the teachers also need to able for delivering the contents. I think, besides their students, a teacher is also a student, who learns how to facilitate the students as long as their study

The previous strategies/techniques presented here are useful. In addition, in the similar context, one of my teaching strategies is to show the importance of the subject for their future works. One of the techniques is by giving the practical examples of each topic within the future works.

I am teaching mathematics to business administration students and I had also some difficulties on getting their attention on the first few meetings since most of them actually do not like math. I just do my best and made my teaching lively by giving relevant jokes (related to the topic) and attraction came naturally. 

 Try to involve them in the preparation of the courses. for example, you designate for each course one or two students to prepare it and present it to their classmates and you as a teacher you entant only  to correct or clarify a point of such so that students feel the importance of the research they have done and they'll feel themselves helpfull. The course will be interactive between you and your students and between the students themselves. I hope that this method will solve the problem. good luck

False conceptions and negative attitudes could be the reason behind a question that arises in students' minds: Why do we need to learn? For example, I observed the positive attitudes of students towards courses such as languages, biology, geology... etc., that most students also describe these courses as being interesting, and that they have a tangible use in the real world. In contrast, they are asking themselves: “Why do we need to learn geometry? When will we need to use Pythagoras or Thales theorems?” This shows that they have not gone through a learning experience that has enabled them to realise the importance of geometry in everyday life. In view of that, we can attract students attention to subjects/courses if we organise and design them in a relevant structures to their life, previous experiences and using educational technologies that make such subjects more tangible.

You have an important information about students (subject that attract their attention). Why not use examples from software programming to transfer the desired knowledge "learning by analogy."

Students tend to prefer abstracted materials. They hate to read text book or Faculty notes. So, Staff need to use many ways to attract student attentions; from using media, power point presentations, changing voice and gestures, assignments and folloing up wth such assignments, ..... lots of attractions surrounding students mowadays and social stresses in cetrain environment make it difficult on students and staff.

You should have a different a way to reach the idea to the brain of the students during your teaching for example. You should have any experiences in joining between the theoretical and experimental ideas, i.e., first, start by your academic lecture in the class and then go to an experimental part in the lab to make a good relation between the theoretical and experimental parts. So ensure that your student will start to ask you and sharing you also in your activities.  This my opinion

I should think that all that is needed is to be yourself, and let show how much you are interested in that subject that you teach. Your enthusiasm will easily transmit to your students. (I have noticed , as I teach what is considered as a rather boring subject - Anatomy for Medical students -, that the least I like some of the many subjects that I teach, the least I am able to call for the students' attention. Whereas those subject that I most love are also usually those that the students appreciate most.)

So, simply be yourself and let show your personal enthusiasm for the subject that you teach...

Hi Victoriya. I try to bring from theory to practice, but first i try to explain why students should learn this subject, and why not.

Step 1: Know your students

Step 2: Aligns what they want with the objectives of your course

Step 3: challenge them with themes and interesting examples

Step 4: have high expectations of their performance

Step 5: make them part of learning, they are active agents

Following are some of the things that I implement while teaching Physiology to MBBS students...

1. While introducing any new topic,  build on their previous knowledge.... that is -link the topic with something that they already know.

2. Give everyday examples or some illustrations, so as to make them understand the concept....

3. Add humor related to the topic...it makes the topic attractive, and maintains their attention....

4. Repeatedly emphasis the important points.

5. Keep the lecture interactive. Ask them questions that stimulates critical thinking.

6. Ask questions in general to the whole class.. and find out their answers...if it is right then compliment them, if it is wrong then give them an answer & explain why it's wrong....

7. Be friendly with them, then they won't hesitate to answer or ask their doubts....

8. Do not read from a PowerPoint presentation/ or slide show... it makes the lecture boring....only use it to show diagrams, figures or videos....or to list the major points to be covered, so as to ensure that no important point is missed. Keep the lecture interesting.

9. Tell them what is important and what should be stressed.

10. Finally conclude by summarizing what has been taught.
