This question might be a silly question. I wonder how may I adopt/adapt a research questionnaire/instruments into my study?
For example, my study is about intellectual capital and SMEs performance. May I just adopt/adapt any instruments that come with the same context of the study (conceptualization/operationalisation)? Or there are certain techniques for me to evaluate them to make those instruments eligible for my study?
Another question is, if the adopted/adapted instruments were using 5 Likert Scale, I cannot simply change it to 7 Likert Scale right as it would violet prior validation? What if among all my variables (that uses 5 Likert Scale for example), and I found one instrument for my DV (for example) that only has 7 Likert Scale, do I have to find another instrument or these can be validated later though the data analysis to use them all as my instruments?

For variables that are measured by Likert scales, you typically sum up the scores from the separate Likert-scored items. You would then treat these scale variables as continuous measures, so that you could use them in correlations, regressions, etc. If you use standardized coefficients, this will eliminate any differences in the underlying scoring (5 versus 7 points).

As you have statements with 5-point scale and 7-point scale, first you decide what is the scale you want to keep.
If you want to keep 5-point scale, then you have to transform the 7-point scale into 5. So that, every measure of 7-point scale should be multiplied by (5/7).
If you want to keep 7-point scale, then you have to transform the 5-point scale into 7. So that, every measure of 5-point scale should be multiplied by (7/5).
This is the easiest and simplest way to do. Hope this will help you.

Multiplying any variable by a constant (e.g., 5/7 or 7/5) will have no effect on its correlations with other variables. Key words: no effect.
