Thank you for sharing and responding to my question. Do you think that self-directed learning designs are effective methods of teacher development programs?

Teachers are lifetime learners. Give them autonomy. Allow collaboration. Offer recognition and respect. Praise publicly and reward now and then.

I would argue that the programmes of study I am aware of for teaching do not have a lack of motivation challenge. Indeed the majority of time pre-service /trainee teachers are highly motivated and very much challenged! I think an interesting spin off would be how they remain motivated once they transition from being a student /trainee into a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) where they do not have the same support mechanisms in place as they do whilst training.

Technological tools can be used to facilitate learning in classrooms. Teachers motivation to improve their teaching methods and strategies goes beyond the availability of these technologies. Increasing their salaries and involving them in decision making will greatly motivate them to use a variety of teacher methods that suit the learners developmental stages.

Try incentives

Teachers sitting in PD are often, well, just bored because they're "sitting." As a teacher-educator, I lead PD experiences for districts and school sites regularly. I'm in the teacher learning PD environment constantly. Here's what I learned: They struggle to find relevance to what they hearing to what they WANT to do.

1. To increase motivation add ARCS Motivational strategies to the instructional design of the PD.

2. So I've got your attention, you may wish to move on to try gamifying the PD or flipping the instruction for PD. Consider developing fun, engaging activities for teachers to learn whatever the subject.

3. Look up "#eduprotocols" on Twitter for examples of fun gamified learning processes that use technology tools. You can fit just about any content into an eduprotocol. BTW...#eduprotocols are actually processes for learning content that teachers can use with their students at any grade level; I just adapt them for PD with adults by changing up the DOK level for adult learning, which brings me to the last idea...

4. Learn about Malcolm Knowles Androgogy Theory and you'll find the 8 principles that influence adults when they are in "learning" mode.

I agree with you that new modern techniques of active, and other similar interactive training methods are need of the hour.

I have also tried in past similar interactive techniques, using modern technological tools for such purposes, however teachers are least interested in their own learning, unless it is mandatory through their institution, or essential for job acquiring.

Teaching requires devotion and determination with consistent hard work to be a quality professional. Quality teaching and teachers are rare to find, and motivated teachers with passion to lead and perform are far more filtered through systems.

Nevertheless, online short PD programs with credibility can facilitate and motivate fresh graduates to join the industry and prove themselves as creative teaching minds.
